ELEMENTAL
Four female artists inspired by nature, and painting the stories and emotions behind it.
Nature and the elements have long been the source of Inspiration and motivation for artists. From the earliest cave paintings to the latest contemporary works, artists have found beauty, power and mystery in the natural world.
This exhibition “Elemental” features the work of four female artists who explore their relationship with nature in unique and personal ways. The artists Annette Price, Yang Xu, Faye Knight and Mee Mee Chai use painting as their medium to capture the essence of the natural world through their own unique filters from life experience, bringing a fusion of perspectives to the canvas and invite you to share your experiences and connections.
Each painting tells a story rooted in the elemental forces that captivate the artists: landscapes, rivers and streams, flora and fauna. Working with acrylics, oils and cold-wax, using pallet knives, brushes, and other mark-making tools, their styles range from impressionistic to contemporary
abstraction. Each brush stroke and colour palette pays homage to the intricate tapestry of the natural world.
So, immerse yourself in a visual symphony where each painting unveils a story, transcending cultural boundaries. From vibrant palettes to subtle nuances, the Elemental Exhibition is a celebration of female creativity, uniting different voices in a harmonious exploration of the wonders of the natural world.
ABOUT ARTISTS
Yang Xu
Yang Xu (Tzu) is an adventurous artist who always seeks new and fun ways to express the world through her artworks. She's known for her utilisation of bold colours and brushstrokes to capture the spirit and emotions of the painting subjects.
Yang's artwork often reflects a fusion of realism and abstraction, allowing her to explore both the tangible and intangible aspects of our existence. By juxtaposing recognizable elements with more ambiguous forms, she strives to create a dialogue between the familiar and the unknown, encouraging viewers to interpret and connect with the artwork on a personal level.
Ultimately, her goal as an artist is to transport viewers to a realm of contemplation and wonder. She aspires to create visual poetry that invites introspection, sparks curiosity, and celebrates the profound beauty that surrounds us. With each brushstroke, she endeavours to ignite a sense of connection between the artwork, the viewer, and the world at large.
Yang is environmentally conscious and uses eco-friendly art materials where possible.
Annette Price
Annette is a London-based abstract artist who finds inspiration in the fluid and dynamic nature of water. She is intrigued by its shimmering beauty and how water interacts with the soil, silt and rock that it flows over, changing its form and colour depending on temperature and gradient, reflecting light and intertwining with mud and plants.
Her art is an emotional reaction that is inspired by many years of kayaking and photographing water as an editorial photographer, working with a camera from both kayaks and diving.
She works with acrylics and mixed media, utilising brushes, palette knives and other mark-making tools to convey her passion for water.Her artwork is characterized by dynamic brushstrokes, captivating colour palettes, and lively compositions that evoke a feeling of energy and motion.
Faye Knight
Faye Knight is a contemporary acrylics and mixed media artist. Established on the Oxfordshire and West Berkshire art scene. Her
vibrant, impressionist studies of the English countryside now sell worldwide.
Her cottage studio is situated off the beaten track, amongst rolling farmland and winding wooded paths, each season provides an endless variety of textures and hues to be captured in her paintings.
If a running theme could be suggested for Faye’s work, ‘Be in touch with nature’ would summarise it very well. With names including: ‘The Quiet Place’, ‘Into the Woods’, ‘The Warm Scent of Summer’ and ‘Joy’, each painting speaks of the release found in abandoning our senses to the timeless, intoxicating beauty of the hidden places in ournatural world.
Faye is an accredited member of West Berkshire and North Hampshire Open Studios and a member of West Ox Arts Gallery. You can also see
selected works exhibited at Oxford Art Weeks during May, the Artysan Gallery in Stow-on-the-Wold,
Howarth’s Gallery Newbury and at her Open Studios during May.
Mee Mee Chai
MeeMee Chai, also known as 美雨子, is a London-based artist originally from Malaysia. A self-taught visual artist with a background in commercial art and interior design, she explores various media, including ink, acrylic, and oil on paper, wood, and canvas. Her unique style seamlessly blends fantasy and realism with untamed elements, evoking profound emotions and memories, and showcasing her deep appreciation for the beauty in God's creation.
In addition to her role as a painter, Mee Mee is the author of "Handwritten," a book reflecting her lifelong passion for drawing and writing. She skillfully shares her personal experiences and interpretations of relationships with people, God, and nature.
Mee Mee's paintings are special because they aren't just pretty to look at—they tell stories and evoke emotions. She doesn't adhere to
strict rules in her art; she sees each canvas as a way to express her feelings and invite others into her world. She hopes her art evokes deep feelings in people, not just on the surface but in their hearts, and establishing a strong connection through her art is something she genuinely desires.
Mee Mee's artwork is owned and collected by enthusiasts worldwide.
